Functions of MBBR system screens

May 03, 2025

MBBR system screens have many important functions in the moving bed biofilm reactor system, mainly including the following aspects:

1. Filler interception and fixation
The biological fillers used in the MBBR system are the key elements of the system operation. They provide carriers for microorganisms to attach and grow. The primary function of MBBR system screens is to effectively intercept these fillers and prevent them from flowing out of the reactor with the water flow, ensure the stable existence of the fillers in the reactor, and maintain the treatment capacity of the system. By limiting the fillers to a certain area, the fillers can fully play their role as biofilm carriers in the reactor and improve the sewage treatment effect.

2. Uniform distribution of water flow
Reasonably designed MBBR system screens can evenly distribute the sewage entering the reactor. The screen can evenly distribute the water flow on the cross-section of the reactor to avoid short-circuiting of the water flow or excessive or low local flow rate. This is conducive to full contact between sewage and biological fillers, so that pollutants in sewage can be evenly transferred to the surface of the biofilm, providing a stable living environment for microorganisms and improving the removal efficiency of pollutants.

3. Prevent debris from entering
Sewage may contain various debris, such as leaves, plastic sheets, fibers, etc. MBBR system screens can play a preliminary filtering role, intercepting these larger debris, preventing them from entering the reactor, and preventing debris from clogging or entanglement with the biological filler, affecting the normal growth and metabolism of the biofilm. At the same time, it also reduces the risk of debris damaging the aeration system, stirring system and other equipment in the reactor, ensuring the normal operation of the system.

4. Auxiliary aeration and mixing
Some MBBR system screens are designed to work with the aeration system to assist the aeration process. For example, the structure of the screen can better disperse the air in the water, forming a more uniform distribution of bubbles and improving the aeration efficiency. In addition, the screen can also promote the mixing of the water body in the reactor to a certain extent, enhance the interaction between sewage, biological filler and microorganisms, and help improve the treatment performance of the system.
